The featured artists at the 2016 Southeast Horn Workshop will be Andrew Bain and Haley Hoops; and the Tri Star Brass.
Andrew Bain was appointed to the chair of Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic by Gustavo Dudamel in May 2011.
Born and raised in Australia, Andrew comes from a family of four boys, three of which are musicians. He was first introduced to music at age 8 when he took up the piano. Four years later, he was enrolled at Brighton High School in their special music program. Soon after, he switched to the French horn because he loved the sound. Andrew ultimately received a Bachelor in Music from the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide. He furthered his studies with Geoff Collinson in Sydney, Hector McDonald in Vienna, and in 2003 completed a Graduate Diploma in Chamber Music under Will Sanders in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Andrew has had the opportunity to play with some of the best orchestras around the world. He started as Associate Principal Horn for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 1997–2000. From there he went on to play with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra from 2000–2001 and 2005–2009. He also held positions with the Münchner Symphoniker from 2001–2003 and the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House from 2003–2005. From 2009 to 2012, Andrew was Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and since 2003 has appeared as the Principal Horn of the Colorado Music Festival. Andrew is a regular soloist having performed concerti with the Melbourne Symphony and Queensland Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Britten’s Serenade with the Music in the Round Festival and Schumann’s Konzertstück at the Colorado Music Festival and with the Colburn Orchestra in Los Angeles.
Second horn player Haley Hoops has been with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 1999, and she is a winner of the 2013 International Horn Competition of America.
Ms. Hoops has performed with major orchestras across the country, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, the Grant Park Festival Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra.
Ms. Hoops began her career studying music at the University of Michigan, where she earned her bachelor’s degree before heading to Northwestern University for a master’s degree in music.
In addition to performing with the DSO, Ms. Hoops is also a teacher with a private horn studio, is an assistant horn instructor at Southern Methodist University, and a guest clinician at major universities.
Nashville-based Tri Star Brass Ensemble is the joining of forces of brass quintets from Belmont University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Vanderbilt University. The brainstorm of tubist Gilbert Long, Tri Star performs great classic brass ensemble music while also showcasing local composers and arrangers.
