Thomas Jöstlein has been Associate Principal Horn with the St. Louis Symphony since April 2010, and has toured California, Carnegie Hall and Europe with the orchestra and its music director, David Robertson.

Most recently, he served as Assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Illinois, leading the charges in the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and Ian Hobson's Sinfonia da Camera while teaching horn and orchestral repertoire.
He will serve as visiting Professor of Horn (both natural and modern) at Indiana University in the Spring of 2014.

From 2007-09, Mr. Jöstlein was the New York Philharmonic's Assistant Principal Horn, playing all positions, including Principal and Third Horn. Under the direction of Lorin Maazel, he performed on three major tours, including the historic live broadcast from North Korea.

Previously, he held positions with the Honolulu, Omaha, Richmond, and Kansas City symphony orchestras over a course of 13 years.

In the summers, he has performed and taught at the Eastern Music Festival (Greensboro, NC), the Lancaster (OH) festival, and the Britt Festival (OR).

As a soloist, Thomas won First Prize in the professional division of the American Horn Competition in 2003 and the Grand Prize at the Hugo Kauder Music Competition at Yale University in 2005, earning a recital at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.
Mr. Jöstlein studied with hornists William VerMeulen and Thomas Bacon at Rice University, and privately with tubists Arnold Jacobs and Roger Rocco. He has taught at the University of Hawaii and Virginia Commonwealth University.

His musical passions include alphorn and natural horn playing, and spreading the liberating teachings of brass pedagogues Arnold Jacobs and Roger Rocco.

Thomas Jöstlein lives in University City, MO, with wife and fellow horn player Tricia and sons Klaus and Max. He plays horns made by Keith Berg, Engelbert Schmid, Rick Seraphinoff, and a Vanon alphorn.
